Further Work by Indrė Šerpytytė

Orders, 2016
The thematic introduced in Pedestal is extended in a series of sculptural works, Orders. Using readymade polished granite plinths and blocks these sculptures reference not only the display of public sculpture in the former Eastern Bloc
but memorial and funereal architecture. In an uncanny twist they echo the forms of Minimalist sculptures, one of the
dominant Modernist forms prevalent in the West during the Cold War, as well as alluding to the formal concerns of Constructivism or Suprematism.
Whilst being highly seductive materially, as Artforum writer Sylwia Serafinowicz has noted, ‘. . . they are queasy things, too,
as they also call to mind headstones and other kinds of memorial sculpture . . . markers of ideologies and horrors that still haven’t been entirely put to rest.’
A smaller series of sculptures, Orders (Blok A-G) rework the formal concerns in a smaller scale.
